Last warm weather photos of Cornelia in 2011. With 11/11/11 a blustery 29 F degrees, wind, snow, rain will soon follow. Candlelight Christmas begins on Biltmore Estate this week, meaning possibly tens of thousands more will see Vadim's Cornelia and Cedric. Curators say it is now one of the most photographed images on the Estate.

Vadim Bora's Cornelia and Cedric commission was dedicated on Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC, a mere year ago. The sculpture continues to delight visitors, particularly children. Vadim Bora created the most delicate texture for Cornelia's "skin," visible even in hard bronze.

Doors of Asheville Dedication

Mountain Housing Opportunities dedicated the annual Doors of Asheville event and art auction 2011 to Vadim Bora on September 9. Vadim contributed to this event since its inception and fought for recognition of donating artists to receive honorariums and publicity. Artists chosen for the Doors of Asheville now receive an honorarium for their work, inclusion in a catalog, and public recognition. Funds raised from the art auction go to improving homes, neighborhoods and communities for the underprivileged.

Mountain Sculptors, a professional artist group of which Vadim Bora was an early member and whose annual exhibition he hosted in his gallery for six years, has mounted its Spring Show in the Pack Place Gallery in downtown Asheville. The exhibition features a special dedication to Vadim, and one of his works - "Spring" - on display.

"Cornelia and Cedric" Sculpture Dedication with Bill Cecil, Jr.

Commemorative "Cornelia and Cedric" Label

Biltmore Estate celebrated Vadim Bora's commissioned bronze sculpture "Cornelia and Cedric" and honored the artist with a dedication ceremony attended by annual pass holders and patrons on September 23, 2010. Lovely speeches were given by Biltmore Company President and C.E.O. Bill Cecil, Jr., Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors Dini Cecil Pickering, and Director of Museum Services Ellen Rickman.

A commemorative bottle of Blanc de Blanc Biltmore champagne with a one-of-a-kind "Cornelia and Cedric" label was presented to the artist and signed by George Vanderbilt's great grandchildren, Bill and Dini -- a delightful gesture and memorable occasion.

Collectors will be able to view the work with the artist, while Biltmore Estate guests and visitors may view "Cornelia and Cedric" just outside Cedric's Pub in the new Antler Hill Village.

The bronze likenesses of Cornelia Vanderbilt, daughter of George and Edith Vanderbilt, and the family’s St. Bernard, Cedric, took up permanent residence at Biltmore’s Antler Hill Village in early August.

Vadim based the life-sized work on archival photographs of Cornelia Vanderbilt playing with one of several large St. Bernards the Vanderbilts kept as pets. He sculpted the piece in a classical style and worked with curators to create symbolic elements, such as the magnolia branch in Cornelia’s hand to commemorate a tree planted in the gardens to celebrate her birth in 1900.

The official unveiling/dedication of the piece will occur in September.

The artist sculpting a portrayal of young Cornelia Vanderbilt.

Vadim has been busy in the studio this spring and summer on his latest project: a larger-than-lifesize sculpture for the Biltmore Estate.

He created the historically-accurate portrayal of Cornelia Vanderbilt -- daughter of George Vanderbilt -- and a beloved family pet, the St. Bernard 'Cedric,' based on a series of archival photographs. The sculpture, which he created in a classical style, will be unveiled at the new Antler Hill Village on the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC later this summer.

Vadim Bora Gallery & Studio will show 120 paintings and drawings from art school students from Asheville's Sister City of Vladikavkaz and its environs of Beslan and Oktyabrskoye. In the exhibition "Me and My Family," a continuation of a program by Sister Cities International, young art students (ages 6-14) show their talents and interpretation of this subject. This is an exhibition for the entire family, the proceeds of which will go to purchase art supplies for the four schools participating:

Rusted automobiles half-buried in the earth; once-powerful tractors, now still, awaiting the scrap heap; a leaning barn, functioning only as storage of dusty unused equipment – all are remnants of forgotten abundant lives of the countryside, captured poetically in the artist's indomitable "exuberant expressionist" style.

Portrait Exhibition at the Grand Bohemian

A select portrait exhibition by Vadim Bora recently concluded at the Grand Bohemian Gallery in Biltmore Village. First exhibited in the lobby of the Grand Bohemian Hotel, the portraits concluded their run on the gallery's front wall last week.

Vadim's current show at the Grand Bohemian is his colorful "Carnival" series. Photos are forthcoming!

Mark your calendars for several upcoming shows at Vadim Bora Gallery in downtown Asheville: Friday, October 2, debuts the works of student art from Beslan and Vladikavkaz, in conjunction with Asheville Sister Cities. The ASCI exhibition runs concurrently and will open the same day at 33 Page Ave, the offices of the organization, and will feature work from students of all six sister cities to Asheville. (This is also the official downtown art walk day.)

Displayed in the stunning Countybank Gallery, 3,300 square feet of airy space in the Federal Building Galleries on Main Street in Greenwood, the exhibition features Vadim's paintings and sculptures, along with the works of other international artists. Some of the pieces stem from Bora's archives, recently returned from Russia, while others are still wet, just off the easel. Vadim Bora Gallery begins the season with a new look and expanded viewing areas in its second floor space overlooking Battery Park Avenue.

"Of Home," a just-completed series of oil-on-canvas works depicting the evocative images and spirit of "home," opens Friday, October 3, during the downtown Asheville Art Walk. Reflecting the ethnic heritage of Bora, the paintings capture the sense of home as being a state of mind, as much as a state of being...and of course, a tangible place in memory.

Vadim Bora recently completed this ecclesiastical commission for the First Presbyterian Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana. This is the second piece of work that the church -- which houses an art gallery -- has acquired from Bora. The oil on canvas painting, which appears like a "movable mural," measures 5' x 10.'

Stealing the Rooster, Revisited

An exhibition on historic Deweese Island, South Carolina, will showcase the works of the Artist Index collective, a select group of painters from South Carolina's Upstate and the mountains of North Carolina. The show takes place at Huyler House, the headquarters of the Deweese Island Arts Council, with an opening reception May 24. This exhibition from some of the region's finest artists continues through June 30. Vadim Bora's pieces were chosen by coordinators for his unique "exuberant expressionism" (a moniker given by a Dutch critic in 2003) that he imbues in each vibrant work.

This past week an article about art and real estate appeared in the online magazine ERealEstateExec.com. The feature article by Doug Shields included an extensive interview with Vadim Bora, as well as interviews with the Asheville Area Arts Council and Blue Spiral Gallery. The article explored the art scene in Asheville and how the local real estate market is stimulated by the arts. The story made the point that visual art, much like the performing arts and other cultural arts, draw home buyers to an area. An article about portraiture appeared in the Asheville Citizen-Times newspaper and included an interview with Vadim Bora in the piece. It explains the procedure of commissioning a portrait and makes the point that it is not only a domain for the "rich and famous," but rather for anyone who wants to capture the image of a loved one at a certain point in time, create a memory, or leave behind an enduring legacy. Vadim is the one artist mentioned who can create portraits in both two and three dimensions.

This November and December brought sculpture to the forefront of Vadim Bora Gallery. With an exhibtion by Mountain Sculptors, (the 3rd annual exhibition), over 40 works were shown at the gallery throughout the two months. The sculpture show also served as backdrop for a reception for a delegation of Russian arts professionals from Vladikavkaz, visiting Asheville with Asheville Sister Cities and the Open World Program. The above work, by Vadim Bora, is titled "Wounded."

Sweet Dreams, Appalachia

First place winner in oils, third place overall, Vadim Bora's "Sweet Dreams, Appalachia" debuted at the Spartanburg Museum of Art for its Hub City Biennial Juried Art Competition in May of 2007. Chosen from some 270 artists' works, "Sweet Dreams, Appalachia" remains on exhibit at the South Carolina museum through June. It will then join Bora's Mountains series in downtown Asheville at Vadim Bora Gallery.

Over the summer of 2006 Vadim Bora created the sculpture "On the Mend!" for Asheville's Mission Hospital Reuters Children’s Outpatient Center. Technical assistant was sculptor Bob Doyon. The grouping of 10 larger-than-life-size sculptures was installed and dedicated in the early fall of 2006.
